Serdar Gurses was born in 1979 in Turkey. After getting his B.S. from Bogazici University in Istanbul he came to the US for his Master’s at Worcester Polytechnic University in Worcester, MA. For his Ph.D. in Cellular Biology and Molecular Genetics, Serdar attended the University of Maryland at College Park. In 2012 Serdar went back to Turkey for an Assistant Professor position at a School of Medicine in a private university.

Following the events of summer of 2016 in Turkey, Serdar decided to come back to the US. After a brief time at Marquette University, he joined the School of Medicine at Indiana University Northwest in Gary as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in 2017. His research is aimed at discovering relations between the immune system and cancer. Serdar started teaching Medical Genetics to 1^st-year students in 2019.

He has been married to Ayse for 14 years and they have two children (Zeynep and Cihan). They have been living in Valparaiso for almost 3 years.
