RICHARD SEVERE was born Port au Prince but moved to the USA at the age of six.  He was raised in Miami and took many trips as a child and young adult to his homeland to maintain a connection with Haitian culture.  Richard joined the English Department at Valparaiso University in 2016 after having previously taught at Centenary College of New Jersey.  He talked about his country and its culture and history from a native’s point of view.  Richard demonstrated the mindset of the resilient Haitian people in his presentation.  Afterwards he treated participants to a taste of Haitian rum.
